Abstract
Leachate recycle is a potentially useful tool that municipalities should consider for increasing the rate of stabilization of sanitary landfills and as a method of partial leachate treatment and disposal. Caution must be exercised, however, to ensure that leachate recycle does not result in increased surface water contamination, and especially groundwater contamination. Rigorous monitoring must be conducted and remediation programs available ad infinitum in order to ensure that surface and/or groundwater contamination does not occur. Leachate recycle is likely to be most readily practiced at new landfills which have been properly designed and operated with a double-lined leachate collection system to minimize the likelihood of groundwater contamination.
