Abstract
Deflection temperature under load is an ASTM test to characterize a plastic for high-temperature environments. Analysis shows that the values can be misleading because they are strongly dependent on specimen thickness and convective heat-transfer coefficient. Since amorphous and crystalline thermoplastic polymers respond differently to temperature change, a representative resin of each classification is used in the analysis.
