Abstract
The significance of studies at West Germany's Fachhochschulen (FH), their status within tertiary or higher education, types of training provided, career opportunities for their graduates, and the value of FH degrees in terms of international equivalence are discussed. The generally-accepted premise in West Germany that the 'Diplom - Ingenieur' is equivalent to an American master's degree, while the 'Diplom - Ingenieur' as conferred by the FH is considered the equivalent to an American bachelor's degree is considered. Other issues related to the FH are also discussed from the perspective of American engineering education.
