Abstract

This paper investigates the seizure or damaging effect of machine parts which failed during operation at the area of load and slide contact. An examination of failed real machine parts engaged with copper alloy parts showed that diffusion during the failure plays the major role. The experiments were conducted to measure the copper diffusion parameters and their temperature dependence in the steel. These results allowed to develop a method for calculation of the temperature splash in the area of load and slide contact. The obtained results indicate that the probability of seizure is greater at a temperature range below the critical line when the grain boundary and short circuiting diffusion provide a higher diffusion rate.
