Abstract

The stress-relaxation effect is analyzed in a boundary layer flow of elastico-viscous fluids past a circular cylinder. The fluid's constitutive equation employs a time derivative which rotates together with the principal axes of the strain-rate tensor and permits a separate parametric description of the relaxation process and the normal stresses. The results show that the relaxation process retards the separation point and reduces the skin friction, which is in a qualitative agreement with previous experiments. © 1987 Steinkopff.
