Abstract

The most complete study on MSW incinerator emissions available to date was conducted by Environment Canada at the Prince Edward Island (PEI) two stage combusion facility in 1985. The metal emissions data from this study is utilized to perform a mass balance of metals in MSW incineration process. This mass balance includes the input quantities In the refuse and the output quantities In the bottom ash, boiler ash, economizer ash and flue gas. The fate of metals is studied in terms of the fractions released through individual pathways. In addition, the stack emission factors of various metals are examined at three different secondary chamber temperatures. Also examined is the Quebec City Incinerator Flakt Air Pollution Control (APC) technology testing data which was reported in 1986. A mass balance for metals through the APC system is performed. The fractions of metals collected from several ash discharges and stack emissions are calculated. The stack emissions are correlated with the quantities in coming to the APC system as well as with its operating temperatures. The analyses of these data indicate the difficulty in performing accurate metal balances on incineration systems. Consequently, it is difficult to accurately predict the metal partitioning to the various incinerator system discharges. An indepth analysis of the data from these two studies yields general conclusions regarding the metal distributions. They are presented and discussed. © 1988 by Hemisphere Publishing Corporation.
