Abstract
The water crisis in Philadelphia epitomised that confronted by every American city. Between 1850 and 1890, the city faced a choice between expanding a pure water system and stopping the pollution of water sources, and that of accepting pollution and adopting mechanical and chemical means for purifying water. -J.Sheail
