Abstract
This chapter covers eight-member rings containing two nitrogens in a 1,4 position, and their fused-ring analogs. In some respects, the nomenclature of 1,4-diazocines is similar to that for the eight-member ring containing one nitrogen. The completely unsaturated compound, for which there exists two valence tautomeric structures is called 1,4 diazocine. The partially saturated derivatives are prefixed dihydro-, tetrahydro-, etc. The totally saturated compound is called perhydro- 1,4-diazocine, or 1,4 diazacyclooctane. This chapter covers all compounds bearing two nitrogens in a 1,4 position are covered, regardless of formal nomenclature. Certain abbreviations are used for compounds that are mentioned repeatedly. Thus, ED is ethylenediamine, OPD is o-phenylenediamine, DMAD is dimethyl acetylene dicarboxylate, Bs is benzenesulfonyl, and Ts is p-toluenesulfonyl. © 1989 Academic Press Inc.
