Abstract

Formation and extent of microcracks in the fracture process zone of concrete is studied by laser speckle interferometry. Main emphasis is given to detection of microcracks, measurement of the width of microcracking zone, and assessment of process zone length. Crack opening displacements measured within the process zone were substantially higher than the values conventionally measured at the crack mouth. Measured critical process zone lengths (length of the microcracking region at peak load) were found to be specimen-size independent.
