Abstract
The power Q absorbed by a lossy target depends upon its effective conductivity σ, as well as its other electrical and geometrical properties. It is apparent from physical reasoning that there is an optimal conductivity σ* at which a maximal amount of power Q* is absorbed. The determination of these quantities and the detailed dependence of Q on σ requires many numerical simulations of the underlying scattering problem. In this letter we propose a simple approximate method which explicitly gives this relationship and significantly reduces the number of computations. The method is demonstrated on the model problem of TM scattering from a finite, homogeneous, and lossy dielectric slab whose exact solution is known for comparison. The approximate technique gives an excellent result. © 1991.
