Abstract

Preparation for a sustainable society must heed the issues of mankind's social, intellectual, and spiritual needs in addition to its physical and economic well-being. As the developed world heads into the information age, the shapers of computer and communication technology must take these broader needs into account. Current examples provide some lessons worth noting. The issues of free speech, privacy, and the unexpected uses of the new technology are emphasized.
