Abstract
In this paper, we present a novel technique to control wake flows past a circular cylinder by means of direct numerical simulations. More precisely, we show how vortex shedding can be substantially suppressed in our two dimensional (2D) numerical simulations over the whole range of Reynolds numbers considered in this work (up to Re = 1000). Our technique consists of the insertion of twin, control vortices in the wake. In all cases where control is turned on, the drag of the full system is considerably reduced or even reversed (leading to propulsion).
