Abstract
A computer-based problem solving and program development environment that is consistent with the needed knowledge and skills to carry out the tasks of programming is defined. This system takes into consideration the difficulties involved in learning programming and the existing environments and their shortcomings with respect to how well they meet students’ needs. This framework for an automated problem solving and program development environment for beginning learners is based on a synthesized process of problem solving, adapted to the particular requirements of programming tasks, and the cognitive activities required at each stage of the process. © 1999, IOS Press.
