Abstract

Gray scale appearance of a target is affected by the target luminance, the luminance of the background area immediately surrounding the target, and the luminance of the wider area that frames the background. Increasing the framing luminance of an image reduces the lightness appearance of the entire image and increases the threshold for low-luminance features in the image. Background luminance enhances suprathreshold discrimination of targets with luminances similar to the background luminance. Surprisingly, frame luminance does not affect the number of discriminable suprathreshold levels except for a slight enhancement due to a dark frame at the lowest background and target luminances. Medical and other applications are discussed.
