Abstract
A method to design and implement a lean infrastructure without which even the very best manufacturing systems cannot operate to their full potential is discussed. Lean, flexible, just-in-time controlled manufacturing systems consist of modules, or cells, dealing with high level distributed data processing and automated material flow, using highly flexible, computer controlled material and information processors. The aim to increase productivity and to provide a total quality control environment has led to the transition from mass production systems to lean methodology and flexible automation.
