Abstract

Because of the diffraction-limited resolution of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), it became possible to measure proper motions of the nearby dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxies using imaging with time baselines of only several years. This contribution discusses the motivation for measuring proper motions; describes highlights of the observational and data-reduction techniques; and reports the proper motions and their implications for the Draco, Fornax, and Sagittarius galaxies.
