Abstract

Rural roads traverse varied land and serve multiple purposes in the US. The Federal Highway Administration's (FHWA) Safety Toolkit aims to help local and tribal agencies implement safety improvements on roads such as this one winding through mountainous, rocky terrain. The FHWA has developed a toolkit and two user guides for transportation professionals and elected officials who are working to improve safety on rural roadways in an effort address these issues. Improving Safety on Rural Local and Tribal Roads-Safety Toolkit (FHWA-SA-14-072) is intended for local and tribal road practitioners, local public works staff, and Federal and State safety engineers.
