Combustion of boron in products of an air-acetylene pre-mixed flame

Abstract

This work is aimed to quantify burn times and temperatures of boron particles as a function of their size. 95% pure amorphous boron powder with particles ranging from 0.04 to 40 μm was injected axially into premixed air-acetylene flames with varying equivalence ratios. The particle size distributions were determined using scanning electron microscopy images of captured particles that passed through the injection system in the absence of the flame. Particle sizes were corrected accounting for the fractal dimensions of the observed agglomerates. Results indicated that the burn time of boron particles, tb is correlated with the particle diameter, d as tb ∼ dn with n≈0.75. The combustion temperature exceeds 2600 K and is not affected by the particle size.
