Abstract
The affects of divestiture upon the American Telephone and Telegraph Company are studied with particular emphasis upon changes in corporate culture, structure, goals and objectives, and management training programs.
A case study approach utilizes a literature search and interviews of a limited number of AT&T executives. It is confirmed that directly or indirectly, management training directions at AT&T are a reflection of corporate goals and objectives, and in a general sense, the corporate culture.
The relationship between training and the corporate culture is not direct and immediate but rather general and evolving. The corporate culture itself is seen as a slowly reflection of corporate management, stated corporate philosophy and objectives, external factors impacting the corporation, and the structure of the company. It is also found that there is considerable awareness of the new imperatives associated with divestiture: the need to compete in a difficult marketplace and the need for entrepreneurism.
