Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to develop a computer-automated triaxial testing system. The validity of the system and the applicability of the programs have been evaluated and it was found that the new system can demonstrate the performance in a competent manner. It provides significant advantages over the conventional apparatus. There also exist some sources of error in this system. However, the system can be maintained on a qualified level by periodically calibrating to simulate the actual testing condition.

The behavior of undrained shear strength of the highly overconsolidated Anderten Clay, was examined using the new system. Both remolded and undisturbed consolidated specimens were tested in compression and extension under undrained conditions. When two groups of samples are compared such as compression versus extension, remolded versus undisturbed, the excess porewater pressure is found predominantly responsible for the lesser strength.
