Abstract
This thesis is concerned with the impact of human factors elements upon the efficiency and quality of output in a manufacturing environment. The subject was aproached through the current literature as it appeared in periodicals and papers. There were very few texts on the subject of human factors discipline, specially in the application of behavioral principles, which this thesis was mostly base on.
The first chapter of this thesis discusses the increasing role people play in product quality, and the changing attitudes of today's work force. The next six chapters are broken down into three parts. Chapter II and III deal with the motivational problems faced by management and their ways of coping with them. Chapter IV to VI deal with human characteristics, which include psychological and physiological limitations and capabilities of individuals. Experience, training, culture, ethics, family background, and personality are some of the items considered as impacting upon quality assurance personnel. Finally, the physical working conditions in which the individual must work are analyzed in chapter VII. Illumination, noise, and temperature are most common conditions shown to affect the inspector.
The final chapter gives an overall conclusion and recommendations on ways that better motivate people. Improving the quality of working life, particularly by the participative management approach, is the most effective means of motivating employees for better quality. If such an approach is applied by management, a successful motivational plan should ensue and result in increased quality productivity, as well as satisfying the employees' expectations.
