Abstract
An energy analysis was performed on an office building using two different software packages - ASEAM and Trakload. The structure studied was the P.S.E. & G. headquarters in Newark, N.J.. The results of various parametric runs were compared. Then results from one of the programs were compared with results of a study carried out by Tishman Research Corporation and Jaros, Baum & Bolles, consulting engineers.
Although the two software products had variations in input requirements, overall the results of the two programs were similar. The overall deviation for total energy consumption between the two programs was between 3% and 15%. If fan usage is discounted the deviation drops to between 1.3% and 9.4%.
The results of the comparison of Trakload and the Tishman study show that four major building components contribute to the majority of the building's energy consumption. These are the heating and cooling equipment, lighting and installed electrical equipment. Due to the building's volume versus exterior surface, energy savings generated by skin alterations are minimal when compared with those which can result from interior changes. In particular, Tishman's results show that enhanced lighting design can yield large energy savings.
