Abstract

The Electromagnetic Transients Program (EMTP) is a computer program used to simulate high speed power system transients. The EMTP input data structures and the rules in setting up the input data file are described in this thesis by means of two sample cases i.e an RLC series circuit and a sin le line to ground fault in power system.

The EMTP input data are very detailed an highly-structured column-dependent. To improve the user-friendliness of EMTP by ignoring the difficulty of arranging the column structures, this thesis presents the EM P User Interactive Program. Sample cases using this interactive program are also demenstrated. The program structure and flip flowcharts of the program are described in terms of the subroutines.

This thesis compares EMTP with SPICE2 in modelling elements in electric circuits. The sample case about fault analysis in power system using SPICE2 is also provided.

The effects of conductor temperature in steady-state and transient conditions are studied using ELECTROCON and EMTP.
