Abstract

A Memory Card Memory Read-out Module is described that is used to collect the data stored in the RAMs of 8052AH BASIC SBCs and transfer it to the storage of another system called stationary recall unit.

The motivation for this system is as follows:

Automatic Rail Diagnostic System (ARDS) of New Jersey Transit Rail Operation (NJTRO) will revolutionize the maintenance of rail cars by monitoring selected on-board subsystems and components. The on-board unit of ARDS is a data gatherer. It can collect data describing the status and performance of selected on-board operating subsystems and components. A 8052AH BASIC SBC is used in the on-board unit and it works as rail car watchman. The collected data is stored in the RAM of the SBC and is transferred to the storage of the stationary recall unit. The stationary recall unit of ARDS is a data interpreter. It runs all ARDS software to process rail car data, to create and maintain databases, and to produce maintenance, diagnostic, and management reports.

A 64K portable battery back-up SRAM memory card was employed for data collection. The memory card which is the size of a credit card is convenient to carry. The interface hardware used to transfer data between the storage of SBC and memory card was designed in this thesis. High-speed CMOS chips are applied in this interface because of low power dissipation, short propagation delay and ideal noise immunity. The program written by BASIC and assembly language performs fast data transfer.
