Abstract

The liquid-liquid equilibria of the ternary systems carbon tetra-chloride-xylene-propylene glycol and carbon tetrachloride-xylene-diethylene glycol were investigated. The effectiveness of the glycols as selective solvents for xylene was represented by a plot of weight ratio xylene to carbon tetrachloride in each phase. It was found that the diethylene glycol was the better of the two solvents at concentrations resulting in more than 75% xylene in the xylene-carbon tetrachloride rich layer. At the lower xylene concentrations the propylene glycol was found more effective as a selective solvent.
