Abstract
Recently, different types of magnetic nanomaterials (NMs) have been used as supporting materials for environmental analysis. The utility of the unique optical, magnetic, thermal and mechanical properties of magnetic NMs has added a new dimension to their applications. Magnetic NMs can convert dissipated magnetic energy into thermal energy; this additional feature opens up possibilities for the development of multifunctional approaches for analytical techniques. Typically, magnetic NMs are directly dispersed in the sample solutions to quickly extract analytes since they can be readily recovered by a magnet, which overcomes problems with conventional approaches of using adsorbent materials, time consumption and large sample volumes. This chapter will discuss these new tools and techniques developed with the help of magnetic NMs for environmental analysis.
