Abstract
This paper presents a technique for assessing the social context of writing and then using that assessment to make writing decisions. To do this, it includes models of the rhetorical situation and the pragmatic situation that can be used to generate justifications for certain textual patterns. The paper also presents sample techniques for using these models to analyze the rhetorical and pragmatic situations as applied to writing a technical report. This paper is based on The IEEE Guide to Writing in the Engineering and Technical Professions (2017), published by IEEE/Wiley Press in the IEEE Professional Communication Society series.
