Abstract
The purpose of student mentoring, in its different meanings and applications, is to contribute to student development beyond academics. In this study, we focus on a mentoring program, which is part of a new educational model and is composed of mentors, peers, and student communities, which together aim to ensure the student’s well-being and contribute to a memorable university experience. The study was carried out in a private university with a multi-campus system throughout Mexico. A total of 2779 students and 24 mentors participated. A continuous Likert scale questionnaire was used for student evaluation of the program, and focus groups were conducted with the mentors. The information obtained from these two sources of information allowed comparison and contrast, to determine coincidences and dissidences. In addition, another questionnaire was applied to graduates of both the previous educational model and the new model, to evaluate how the mentoring program is congruent with the current educational model. The results found that the mentor and the student communities are determining factors in the students’ memorable university experience.
