Abstract
The industrial organization economics (IOE) and resource-based view (RBV) schools contribute uniquely to the strategic management curriculum. However, presentation of the RBV is often inadequate or ineffective, in part due to faculty habit, students’ conceptualization of knowledge as objective and readily transferable, and course pedagogy. We recommend the introduction of an interpretive approach into the strategic management course, as it is well suited to examine processes that are social and complex and is therefore of benefit in developing deeper student understanding of the RBV. Several suggestions are made to develop better linkage between pedagogy and subject matter. © 2004, SAGE Publications. All rights reserved.
