Abstract
Modern greases require long-term performance stability, one important aspect of which is resistance against degradation under high temperature conditions. Several bench tests are used by the industry to assess these grease characteristics, including the well-known Hoffman oxidation test (ASTM D 942). The latter is an adaptation of the rotating pressure vessel oxidation test RPVOT (ASTM D 2272). In the early nineties, ASTM introduced a PDSC oxidation test for greases (ASTM D 5483). The aim of this paper is to offer a better understanding of the basics of this PDSC procedure. Specifically, the authors will address which part of the thermo-oxidative degradation processes is observed and how test conditions affect results.
