Abstract
A mathematical model for the quantitative analysis of infrared (IR) polar diagrams measured from polymer fibres assuming a partial axial orientation was derived. By using this model, the average angle between the polymer chain axis and the fiber axis and the angle between the chain axis and transition moment of a normal vibration can be determined simultaneously from an IR polar diagram measurement alone. This can also be used to facilitate the crystal structure determination. This model is also convenient for determining the orientations of different phases in polymer fibres by IR polar diagram measurements.
