Abstract
The number of unintentional deaths caused by firearms has ranged between 1,225 to 2,000 deaths per year. Many of the victims are young children. In addition, firearms were the leading suicide method for the majority of the youth. Childproof gun could prevent young children to access the firearm and therefore could save young lives. Adults have different hands and fingers than children. By studying the fingertip pattern on gun handle, children could be discriminate from adults. The fingertips of 160 subjects were analyzed and classified in this paper. It proves that fingertip pattern verification is a promising biometric technology for childproof gun design.
