Evaluation of the impact of assisted fluidization by an external force field on the drying process of nanopowders

Abstract
The present work evaluates the enhancement of fluidization of fumed silica nanoagglomerates by an assisting force field, such as vibration or magnetic particles, and its impact on the rate of mass transfer by studying the drying of two different nanopowders. The hydrophilic powders studied were Aerosil® 200 (APF behavior) and Aerosil® 90 (ABF behavior). An experimental set-up was designed for humidifying fluidized powder under regulated moisture conditions and to monitor moisture levels in the gas phase before and after the fluidized bed of powder. Adsorption isotherms for both powders were found using the gravimetric method and by analyzing the moisture content in the gas phase with respect to time during drying of the powder. Enhancement of fluidization is reflected by an increase in moisture captured by the bed as observed in the drying curves obtained by monitoring the moisture in the gas phase.
