Abstract

This chapter discusses the eight-membered heterocycles containing (a) two nitrogens, (b) three nitrogens, and (c) four nitrogens. In this chapter, all the compounds are classified according to the actual relationship of the eight-membered ring nitrogens to each other, regardless of formal nomenclature. The 1,4,5 benzotriazocine is covered in the section on 1,2,5-triazocines. The chapter discusses the preparative methods, the structural aspects, and the chemical reaction of l,2-diazocines, 1,3-diazocines, triazocines, and tetrazocines. The formation of a 1,2-diazocine by cyclization or ring closure is accomplished by the formation of the N=N or N-N bond by the coupling of open-chain dinitro or diamino compounds. The three methods are reported for the syntheses of 1,2-diazocines by means of ring-expansive cycloaddition reactions. The applications of each compound are also discussed. © 1990 Elsevier Science Publishers, B.V.
