Abstract
A measurement and assessment system of surface topography is described for classification of surfaces. Based on this system, surfaces can be analyzed systematically by three methods: single profile method, multi-parallel profile method, and random process method. For surfaces which are Gaussian and isotropic, characteristic parameters can be derived from only one profile using the random process method. The statistical analysis, based on which surface parameters are derived, is presented. Also presented is an experiment performed to assess five specimens using the proposed surface classification techniques.
