Abstract
A variational equation describing the microstructure formation is suggested. This equation relates energy change to the work of the system and the rate of energy dissipation and entropy production. The constructed equation is applied for the description of the eutectic solidification. The effects of the rate of growth and liquid-diffusion coefficient on the lamellar spacing are determined. The theoretical predictions revealed comply with the available experimental data.
