Abstract

An elementary expression for the scattered field is obtained for the acoustic field scattered from a slightly rough pressure release surface. The source is a line source located at depth z0, below the surface which is described by z = ε{lunate}h(x) where ε{lunate} is a small parameter and h(x) describes the roughness. An approximate boundary condition is obtained which is valid to O(ε{lunate}3) and o(z-10. This approximate boundary condition then yields a reflection coefficient which is formally valid to all orders in ε{lunate} and has an elementary physical interpretation. The results are believed to be new, and the method appears extendible to other rough surface scattering problems. A stationary phase argument also suggests that the specular reflection can be large when h″(x) is locally very large and negative. © 1991.
