Abstract
This paper analyses the behaviour of an internal positive column in a rectangular hollow cathode operating in HgAr discharge inside a flat fluorescent lamp (FFL). A multiplicity of luminous nodal regions (LNR) was observed inside the hollow cathode; the total number of LNRs changed with the pressure of argon. The behaviour of LNRs has a direct impact on the brightness and brightness uniformity of an FFL. It has been observed that a single rectangular hollow cathode exhibits, from the positive column standpoint, the behaviour of a multiplicity of cylindrical hollow cathodes. © 1992.
