Abstract

Expressions have been derived for local and average flow-resistance coefficients, for fully-developed turbulent flow over a smooth, flat plate. These results have been extended to calculations of turbulent thermal boundary-layer thickness, with an unheated starting length, and to calculation of heat transfer for high Prandtl and Reynolds numbers. The present results are, by necessity, all based on a semi-empirical theory and extrapolation of experimental results, in the absence of a comprehensive theory on the subject matter. Certain aspects of the discussion are based on solution of generally accepted, differential equations, however, and may be of more fundamental significance.
