Abstract

Since 1985, petroleum contaminated soils (PCSs) have been used in the production of hot mix asphalt (HMA) and PCS in HMA has become an attractive recycling option for PCS. When PCSs are used in the production of hot mix asphalt concrete three beneficial actions occur: incineration, dilution and solidification. In this paper, based on laboratory and field studies, the performance and suitability of construction of hot mix asphalt concrete with petroleum contaminated soils is discussed. Production of hot mix asphalts with several different contaminated soils is first investigated. Then the following engineering issues are discussed based on the laboratory and field data for hot mix asphalts with petroleum contaminated soils: 1) the impact with respect to strength and durability of asphalt concrete, and 2) change in secondary performance parameters of asphalt concrete such as hydraulic conductivity with the inclusion of petroleum contaminated soils.
