Abstract
In this paper, a new method is proposed for planning flow patterns in facilities layout design. The suggested method utilizes the K-Shortest Path techniques to extract the main material flow streams and build a master flow network for a manufacturing system. Minimizing the cross-traffic such as backtracking and cross-flow-line traveling, the master flow network will represent the desired flow pattern of the system. Combined with the consideration of geometric constraints and adjacency requirements, the master flow network is then located on a given floor plan as a design skeleton to help designers generate quality layouts.
