Abstract
A previous review (Yu 1989, 1992a) covered our early efforts in dynamics and vibration of homogeneous and layered elastic plates and shells, including sandwiches. The present review summarizes our more recent efforts in the same general discipline, but these have been extended to further include laminated composites and piezoelectric layers. They reflect the growing importance of laminated composites and the current interest in distributed active vibration control through the use of piezoelectric layers. The main purpose here is to provide a systematic overview of linear and nonlinear dynamical modeling of both homogeneous and various types of layered plates. Many of our early and recent contributions have been made by means of the variational equations of motion in three-dimensional elasticity and piezoelectricity. To help in achieving adequate and effective modeling, a discussion of the variational equations is also included as an integral part of this review. Some recent applications to laminated composites and piezoelectric layers are demonstrated.
