Abstract

Unsteady flow separation is important in many configurations such as aircraft and marine vehicles. In this paper, we present two-dimensional simulations of the impulsively started flow past a circular cylinder over the range of Reynolds numbers 20 ≤ Re ≤ 1000. We pay particular attention to the breaking of the symmetric bubble of vortices into a Karman vortex street which we explain by studying a low (four) dimensional model capable of reproducing the basic symmetry breaking instability. We also present a novel control technique that consists of the insertion of small, twin, control vortices in the wake. The control either suppresses the vortex shedding or creates a reversed Karman vortex street. In all cases where the control is turned on, the drag of the full system is considerably reduced or even reversed (leading to propulsion).
