Abstract
Initial results of evaluating a prototype for an integrated environment supporting the problem solving and program development process are presented. This model, which combines the methodology and the supporting tools to perform the tasks, takes into consideration the cognitive skills that must be gained by students and the tasks performed in problem solving and program development starting with the initial activity of understanding the problem and continuing through program implementation.. The process and essential facilities to assist the student in learning these skills and accomplishing these tasks are provided. This environment, called SOLVEIT (Specification Oriented Language in Visual Environment for Instruction Translation), encapsulates the functionality of the traditional programming environment with a workbench facility to provide the student with a host of utilities that can be used to aid in performing problem solving and program development tasks.
