Abstract
An approach based on process engineering is required to improve the state of the art of bioremediation practice. Process engineering involves the integration of site historical information, chemical and microbiological characteristics, laboratory and field data and possible remedial actions in order to make predictions and design decisions. The approach based on experimentation, coupled with simulation models and other computational tools, allows process engineer to determine the rate limiting process and analyze the potential for in-situ bioremediation in field. The knowledge based systems (KBS) can be used to simplify the decision making process.
