Underlying mechanisms and controlling factors of carbonate reservoir characterization from rock physics perspective: A comprehensive review

Abstract
Over the past decades, there has been a challenge to understand the fundamental mechanisms influencing carbonate reservoir characterization due to their high degree of heterogeneity and anisotropy. The adoption of rock physics techniques has been beneficial to better characterize carbonate reservoirs, however, no comprehensive revision of the state of the knowledge from this perspective exists. This study provides a critical and comprehensive review of carbonate reservoir characterization with respect to rock physics. Further, this review also highlights the most well-known rock physics models used for the characterization of carbonate formations, and how they can be impacted by various well-identified parameters, and the implications for fluid recovery or storage in such reservoirs. This study establishes a repository of carbonate rock characterization using rock physics models, which will enrich the current understanding of this important subject and provide a forward-leaning pathway for field applications.
