Abstract
Recent PCS teletraffic research and field data have shown that the channel holding time (CHT) distribution is not exponential and that the cell traffic (i.e., the merged traffic from new calls and hand-off calls) is not Poissonian. It was also observed that in operational PCS systems the call blocking probability tends to be different than that given by the Erlang-B formula. In this paper, we study the effect of variance of the cell residence time (CRT) on the call blocking performance and investigate the sensitivity of the call blocking probability to the distribution of the CRT. We show that the blocking probability of new call and handoff call are different, they are affected by the CRT distribution in different way. Besides the variance of CRT, the user mobility also has a contribution to influence the call blocking performance.
