Abstract

A case history involving a site with hexavalent chromium contamination in the capillary zone is presented. Utilizing a contaminant transport model developed for capillary zone, chromium contamination migrating to the surface has been determined. CalTOX model, in its present form, is incapable of determining risk due to hexavalent chromium contamination. Utilizing the required chemical properties and toxicity characteristics for hexavalent chromium obtained from literature, the CalTOX model has been modified to determine risk due to chromium contamination. The contamination data determined from the contaminant transport model is input to the CalTOX model and the risk is determined.
