Abstract
This paper provides a detailed analysis of utilizing wireless technology in nuclear power plants to further increase safety, cost efficiency, and increased employee output. In the aftermath of the Three Mile Island disaster, the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations (INPO) was established to facilitate better communication and in turn, reliability. The INPO's standards for using traditional LAN (Local Area Network) and WAN (Wireless Area Network) based communication networks will be analyzed along with their benefits as well. Technology, however, has changed at an exponential rate and new communication networks that are more effective, economical and safe can be utilized via wireless networks installed at nuclear power plants.
