Abstract
Deafness, defined simply, is the incapacity of perceiving sounds. In actuality a deaf person is capable of perceiving sound, however it is their inability to process and decipher these sounds effectively, which inhibits verbal communication. Since the 1500's the education of the deaf has been in constant debate. Throughout time the goal has been to mainstream the deaf population as much as possible, a similar feat for the population of all disabled persons. Technology has been the key factor in such integration as it has made it easier, more convenient, and less cumbersome. The Phonic "Eye" is a device that uses the latest technology and the concept of speechreading to help advance the mainstreaming of the deaf into normal situations by significantly improving their intelligibility of spoken language. The Phonic "Eye" device is designed to be used in classroom settings so that hearing-impaired students and normal hearing students can learn cohesively and simultaneously for shared experience, enhanced learning, and social equality.
